IDEAS Research Report Reveals Relevance of New SPC-1/E Benchmarks

October 14, 2009 – Sydney, Australia

Analysts at Ideas International (ASX:IDE), have released a report and commentary in support of the new SPC-1/E Benchmark Extensions announced yesterday by the Storage Performance Council.

The Ideas International (IDEAS) report, Energy and Performance Come Together with Storage Benchmarking, has been made available for free download here and you’ll find a related IDEAS Insights blog post here.

The following commentary may be attributed to Gary Burgess, SVP Research & Operations, Ideas International:

  • “In light of the increasing focus on Green IT in association with efforts to reduce costs and comply with corporate sustainability objectives, the IT community is crying out for independent, quantifiable and verifiable insights into the tradeoffs involved in choosing one technology over another. With the addition of energy extensions, IDEAS believes that the SPC Benchmarks are taking on a new level of relevance.”

  • “Historically, industry-standard benchmarks have focused primarily on the performance and price / performance of the tested configurations. The SPC-1/E Benchmark adds real-world energy consumption to the mix, offering more detailed insight into the various tradeoffs (performance, energy usage and cost) of deploying one product – or one technology – over another.

  • “The new SPC-1/E Benchmark Extensions help because they quantify outcomes related to the analysis and comparison of different technologies, providing more than just rule of thumb estimates.”

  • “As our report reveals, sometimes the result of the analysis is counterintuitive, and would likely not have been arrived at were it not for the comparative energy data. For example, while the need for speed is pretty much built into the collective IT psyche, our analysis of the two benchmark results currently available from the SPC shows that a 600 GB 10K RPM FC drive solution won three of the four categories (Price / Performance, Price / Capacity, Capacity per Watt, Performance per Watt), beating out the 146 GB 15K RPM FC disk drives. Depending on what your business is looking for, faster is not always better.”
